ChiWonder was founded by Melody Lu, a bilingual Mandarin educator with over 15 years of teaching experience across TK, elementary, and high school programs in California. After years of designing ACTFL-aligned curriculum by hand and grading hundreds of writing and speaking samples one student at a time, Melody saw a gap that couldn't be closed by working harder.
Most American Mandarin programs face the same problem: rigorous proficiency assessment is too expensive and time-consuming to deliver consistently.
Teachers either skip individualized assessment, or they burn out trying. Students get vocabulary drills and worksheets — but rarely the kind of detailed, ACTFL-aligned feedback that actually moves proficiency forward.
ChiWonder solves this by pairing a complete K–12 curriculum with AI assessment that grades writing and speaking against the same ACTFL rubrics used by certified human raters. The result: every student gets individualized proficiency feedback on every lesson, and teachers get back the time they need to actually teach.
